The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a flagship housing scheme launched by the Government of India to help economically weaker and middle-income families own a permanent house. Introduced with the vision of “Housing for All,” the scheme provides financial assistance and interest subsidies on home loans to eligible beneficiaries across the country.
PMAY has emerged as one of India’s most impactful social welfare initiatives, benefiting millions of families in both urban and rural areas. The scheme aims to ensure that every eligible citizen has access to safe, affordable, and durable housing.
Key Objective of PMAY
The primary goal of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is to provide affordable housing to people who do not own a pucca (permanent) house anywhere in India. The scheme particularly focuses on supporting:
- Economically Weaker Sections (EWS)
- Low Income Groups (LIG)
- Middle Income Groups (MIG)
- Families living in slums
- Rural households without permanent housing
Two Major Components of PMAY
| Component | Purpose |
|---|---|
| PMAY-Urban (PMAY-U) | Provides housing assistance to urban poor, middle-class families, and slum dwellers. |
| PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G) | Offers financial support to rural families who do not have a permanent house. |
PMAY-Urban (PMAY-U)
This component is designed for people living in cities and towns. It helps beneficiaries build, purchase, or improve houses. In addition, eligible applicants can avail themselves of interest subsidies on home loans under the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS).
PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G)
PMAY-Gramin targets rural households that either do not have a house or live in kutcha houses. Financial assistance is transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts in installments to ensure transparency and timely completion of construction.
